What is a PAT test?
A PAT test is a yearly interval inspection of electrical appliances to check they are safe and fit for use. This is carried out as an in-service inspection and testing within a workplace or at home.
A full PAT test should include both a visual inspection and more in-depth check using PAT testing equipment. At the end of a PAT test, every appliance should be marked "passed" or "failed". A log sheet should also be produced providing test results and appliance identification.
What does PAT stand for?
"PAT" stands for Portable appliance testing. There is no definition of what a "portable appliance" is in the current legislation, however, the interpretation is "any appliance that has a plug attached to it and plugs into a socket outlet".
Portable appliances can be anything from a kettle or phone charger in your home to it equipment such as laptop chargers and printers within your workplace.
Is it a legal requirement?
Simply no it is not, however, current UK legislation states that businesses must maintain electrical equipment in a safe condition. They also have a legal responsibility to ensure safety of employees and the public. PAT testing is an effective way of doing this as it's deemed a standard way of meeting this obligation.
Within your home or a rented property having the peace of mind that of having your portable appliances tested gives you the peace of mind to minimizing the risk of electrical fires and electric shock damage to the users of the electrical equipment as they wear and tear over time.
How often should items be PAT tested?
This depends on the level of risk within an environment where electrical appliances are prone to wear and tear. In an office a yearly Test on laptop chargers, photocopiers telephones is recommended but the competent person carrying out PAT testing will assess the test period within it's environment that electrical equipment is being used to determine this.
